Even though I’m not in TN, my family sent presents (how great is that?). My favorite thing is a little book my Dad made about my grandmother (Thanks Dad). Dad has been going through some of her old photos and found some things she had hand written on little scraps of paper. On one of them she wrote song lyrics. These are the lyrics the way she wrote them (there’s also a recipe entitled “Hen”):
Song (Don’t you Remember the Time)
Just down the lane – over the hill, under the old oak tree -
There by the Tree, we planned a dream,
Wond-der-ful – dreams to me.
I used to call you sweet heart of mine,
Don’t you remember the time?Cho
When the shadows fall, and the stars begin to – peep, when the little birds and flowers fall asleep, mem-ories bring back a picture, complete. Dear little sweet heart of mine, when the silvery moon was smiling from above,
I was smiling too – on the only one I love, we were Connected, for we were in love. Don’t you remember the time?
Another note he found said this:
The Way to Happiness
Keep your heart free from Hate -
Your Mind free from worry.
Live Simply.
Expect – little.
Give Much.
I’m guessing she read that somewhere and wrote it down. Or maybe she just wrote it, I don’t know. But I do know that she lived her life that way (except maybe for a little worrying about her family). She was as good as they come, and I miss her very much.
I asked her once what her favorite holiday song was. She told me – Silver Bells. It’s one of my faves too, and I played this version for her then. Bing Crosby with Rosemary Clooney.
